Officials at the University of Tennessee announced Tuesday that the second longest tenured Volunteer coach, John Trembley, has been relieved of his duties as head coach of men’s swimming and diving effective immediately. News reports quoted Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart declaring the action was taken because of “gross misconduct.”
Trembley, the 2011 Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year, was in his 23rd season as the Volunteers’ coach. Trembley, a 1975 Tennessee graduate, was one of the nation’s elite 50-yard swimmers, speeding to a 19:49 in 1974.
Lars Jorgensen, a second-year assistant at Tennessee, has been named to lead the Volunteers for the remainder of the season. The 1994 graduate holds the school’s 1,000 free record at 9:05. Before joining the Volunteers staff, Jorgensen had been the head coach at the University of Toledo.
