BANGOR, Maine — Bangor High School’s second-place finish at the Class A boys state swimming and diving championships behind a young, deep and talented Cheverus of Portland squad included performances among the elite in Maine interscholastic swimming history.
David Smallwood’s second place of 1 minute, 42.3 seconds in the 200 free is the third-fastest in Maine.
The fastest 200 free belongs to former Ram swimmer Jason Thomas (1:40.7). Thomas, who raced the time standard in 1999, continued his swimming at the University of Tennessee.
Bangor’s 400 free relay time of 3:19.3 is the fifth-fastest in Maine. However, three of the four faster relays, including the state record (3:14.4), were swum by Bangor.
In the 200 medley relay at the state meet, coach Phil Emery’s Rams finished with the fourth-fastest relay in interscholastic competition. The three faster relays are Bangor’s.
Emery, who described his team’s performance at this year’s state meet as excellent, notes that in the trials all times swum by the Rams were career-best save Smallwood’s and Liam Reading’s, who swam their career records in the finals.
Reading became the first swimmer in the storied history of Bangor swimming to break the minute mark in the 100 breaststroke. Smallwood also eclipsed Jake Jentzer’s long-held BHS 100 butterfly record of 52.7 with a sizzling 51.9.

Curran, Batson shine

Former Mount Desert Island of Bar Harbor swimmer Chelsey Curran, a sophomore at La Salle University, sped to a 56.5 in the 100 backstroke for 10th place at the recent Atlantic 10 Championships.
Curran also clocked a 52.6 in the fifth-place 400 free relay (3:27.3).
Also at the Atlantic 10, Ellsworth’s Brian Batson, swimming for La Salle, swam a 46.4 in the final of the 100 free (46.0 in the trials). In the 800 free relay, Batson split 1:41.8 for the sixth-place Explorers and in the 200 free relay he recorded a 20.6 on the team’s sixth-place relay (1:22.3).
The University of Richmond won the women’s championship while St. Bonaventure won the men’s title.

Galea sets Colby mark

At the NESCAC Championships held at Wesleyan College in Middletown, Conn., Vincent Galea set a Colby College record in the 200 free (1:41.6). Galea earned a sixth-place award with his 46.2 100 free.
Paul Wenneberg of Cape Elizabeth scored in the 100 breaststroke for Colby at 58.4.
Williams College won the championship for the 11th consecutive year.

Hodsdon set for Div. II meet

Brewer’s Jessica Hodsdon, a senior at Bentley University, will compete in the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Nationals scheduled for March 5-9 in Birmingham, Ala.
Hodsdon will race in the 100-yard breaststroke and in the 100 butterfly.
Teammate Nicole Mancini of Falmouth has qualified for the NCAA Division II diving prequalifying meet March 5 in Birmingham. The top 22 finishers in the prequalifying meet will advance to the championships.
Also diving for Maine will be Travis Wibby (South Portland), Spencer Warmuth (Brewer) and Ashley Higgins (Bangor).
Boston University won both titles a year ago and the Terrier women have won three of the last four titles. The Terrier men ended the eight-year reign of UMBC with last year’s championship.

College notebook

– Jessica Hodsdon of Brewer won four silver medals and one gold in the Northeast Conference Swimming and Diving championships where Hodsdon and her Bentley teammates finished second behind Southern Connecticut University earlier this month. The senior split 53.7 seconds on the winning 400 free relay (3:35.5) and anchored the second-place 400 medley relay with a 54. Racing the 100 butterfly, she finished at 57.4 for second place. Hodsdon also nabbed a silver in the 100 breaststroke at 1:04.2.
– James Wells and Indiana Hoosiers closed the dual-meet season with a win over Purdue University. Wells, a Morse High grad, swam a 48.5 in the 100 back for second place and led off the winning 200 medley relay with a 22.5 backstroke leg. He finished third in the 200 backstroke in 1:50.
– At the New England Intercollegiate Swimming Championships held in White River Junction, Vt., Husson University’s Megan Call scored for the Eagles in the 50 breaststroke.
– Bowdoin College will host the women’s NESCAC Swimming and Diving Championships Feb.15-17. Williams College has won 12 consecutive team titles.

The championship season opens for Penobscot Valley Conference swimmers and divers Monday when the PVC boys race and dive at Husson University in Bangor. Racing begins at 6 p.m. The girls compete at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Husson.
The meets were originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday, but were postponed due to the pending snowstorm.
Coach Phil Emery’s Bangor High teams have won 22 PVC titles in the league’s history. This year’s Rams, with a quality front line of swimmers led by David Smallwood and Liam Reading, must outrace the always speedy Mount Desert Island Trojans coached by Tony DeMuro. This year’s MDI team also has front-line quality led by Ross Johnston and Madison Luck.
“There should be some very exciting races as there are some really fast swimmers on other PVC teams,” Emery said.
Cam Fadley of Foxcroft Academy is among the fastest swimmers in the interscholastic league and can race multiple strokes and distances. Brewer’s Josh Williams is a talented backstroker and leads the Witches’ freestylers at various distances while Ellsworth’s seniors Maks Grover
and Ben Walton swim fast.
While the Rams are racing for their 23rd PVC title, Emery continues to prepare his team for the state meet.
“We are looking to qualify swimmers for the state meet and some of those who have qualified in one event to pick up a second event,” Emery said.
Meanwhile, coach Cindi Howard’s Bangor girls, led by elite racer Emma Waddell, will face challenges from a number of the PVC’s quality swimmers and will be challenged by MDI.
MDI’s Leila Johnston, a 59.3-second 10 butterflyer, will join veteran racers Erin Connery and Olivia Jacobs in challenging Bangor in relays and individual events.

College notebook

– Former Mount Desert Island High swimmer Ian Carbone, now a junior at the University of Texas, raced for the seventh-ranked Longhorns in their victory over the University of Arizona Wildcats, the No. 1 ranked team in the NCAA Division I. Carbone finished the 100 breaststroke in 55.2 for fourth place and split 54.7 on a Longhorn 400 medley relay.
Morse High graduate James Wells finished second in the 100 back (48.8) for the eighth-ranked Indiana Hoosiers in their win over 14th-ranked Louisville. He also nabbed third in the 200 back at 1:48.1 and fifth in the 50 free in 20.8.
– Husson University’s Megan Call will close her racing for the coach Bruce Babin’s Eagles when she competes in the New England Intercollegiate Swimming Championships beginning Friday in White River Junction (Vt.) at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center. Call, a senior, will race in the 50, 100, and the 200 yard breaststroke.
– Colby College’s Kathryn Lee broke the 200 butterfly record set in 2004 when she finished in 2:10.7 in Saturday’s NESCAC meet against Bowdoin College . Vincent Galea continued his speedy swimming for the Colby men when he swam a 47.7 in the 100 yard free for a win. Bowdoin debated the Colby men.

At their recent competition with John Bapst Memorial High, coach Kathy Cahill’s Brewer High swimmers and divers actively engaged the Coaches vs. Cancer Challenge, an outreach of the American Cancer Society.
The Brewer team constructed a Wall of Remembrance at the Bangor Y pool, honoring all those touched by the disease. In addition, a Brewer swimmer assembled literature on the disease and treatment information. This information was available to the public attending the meet.
Brewer’s racing caps for the meet were not the team’s traditional black and orange. Instead, Cahill’s swimmers raced in pink caps to promote awareness of the disease.
Since 1993, the Coaches vs. Cancer program has raised $87 million for the American Cancer Society. Cahill recognized not only her swimmers’ initiatives, but also the supportive response of the Crusader swimmers.

Smiths are diving leaders
With Maine’s interscholastic season entering the final weeks of the dual-meet season prior to the opening of championship season, divers Will Smith of Mount Desert High and Jack Smith of Belfast High are ranked as leaders in interscholastic diving regardless of class.
Smith has scored 212.70 points to lead the state in six dives while Smith has the state’s second highest total at 201.60 points.
MDI swimmer Ross Johnson has emerged among the state’s leaders in multiple events. The senior is fourth in the 200 individual medley (2 minutes, 3 seconds), sixth in the 100 free (50.1) and fourth in the 100 back (55.4).
Meanwhile, Brewer’s Josh Williams’ 54.52 in the 100 back is one-hundredth off the state leader’s 54.51 by Jerome Gravel of Scarborough. Interestingly, Bangor’s Liam Reading is slightly more than a second behind Gravel, also the state leader in the breaststroke.
Reading’s teammate, junior David Smallwood, continues to swim with the state’s fastest. At 1:47.8 in the 200 free, he is fourth behind the state’s leader, Trevor Lawton of Cheverus, and he also is second in the 50 free at 22.2. Smallwood’s 50 free is the fastest swum at Bangor High since Scott Loukes’ 22.1 in 2002 and the third fastest in the history of Ram racing.

Swimming notebook
– Emma Waddell of Bangor swims fast. The junior speedster leads the state in four events. (200 free 1:56.8), (200 individual medley 2:09.8), (100 free 54.3), and (500 free 5:14). Waddell and her Ram teammates close out their dual-meet season this week against Old Town.
– The Maine Black Bear women conclude their dual-meet season at the University of New Hampshire Friday in a 5 pm. meet. UNH’s Jenni Roberts of Sanford High was recently named the American East Swimmer of the Meet for the third time this season.
The transfer from the University of Maryland established a UNH pool record in the 200 free at 1:50.7 earlier this month.
– In Waterville, Colby’s Vincent Gale continues to race fast for the Mules. In the Mules’ loss to Trinity, he sped to a 21.9 in the 50 free.
– One of the Maine’s most veteran and longest serving swim coaches is Gary Theriault, in his 34th year of coaching Orono High swimming. The former Bangor High swimmer has two recent Orono swimmers, Lauren and Cameron Dwyer, competing for UMaine. Lauren swims backstroke and freestyle while her brother Cameron races in the various stroke events.

– Husson University’s Martina Bosse of Brewer set 1-meter diving records in the Eagles’ home meet Saturday against Rhode Island College. Her record of 191.5 points for six dives and her five-dive total of 152.9 points set the new school standard. Bosse will compete in New England
Intercollegiate Championships later this season.
– In the Colby vs. Bates men’s meet, Colby’s Vincent Galea displayed his freestyle versatility, winning the 50 free (22.0), the 100 free (47.9) and the 200 free (1:45.9). The Bobcats defeated Colby.
– Katie Anderson, the granddaughter of veteran Eastern Maine basketball and baseball official Bruce Anderson, is ranked 10th nationally in the NCAA Division III backstroke. Anderson swims for Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. The freshman from San Diego has recorded a 2:03.2 backstroke. Her father, David Anderson, swam for Brewer High.

University of Maine swimmers swam 86,000 meters of long course (50 meters) workouts during their swim practices in Florida during semester break.
In addition to their water work, the Black Bears also trained on dry land seven of the nine days.
“We had enough time to get done what we needed to get done and we had enough time to add the new sets we wanted to introduce,” Maine coach Susan Lizzotte explained. “Our intervals for some of our sets were faster than we have done in the past and our 400 individual medley sets particularly excited some of swimmers.”
Lizzotte now is transitioning her team to 25-yard training, preparing for the remainder of the dual season and the championship season, which is four weeks away.
“We are building back into yards by swimming 75s and 125s,” Lizzotte said.,
Additionally, following the demanding training period, Lizzotte has prioritized fundamentals of stroke mechanics and start-and-turn work in recent practices.
Yuri Chornobil, Maine’a talented distance swimmer, has returned from his academic study abroad and will compete for the Black Bears this semester.

Emery praises assistants
While coach Phil Emery’s Bangor swim squad defeated a strong Cheverus High team, last year’s runner up, in a dual meet last week, Emery noted the Rams need improvement in turn and starts streamlining. On the other hand, Emery praised the work of his assistants coaches Jared Lizzotte and Dave Barnett.
“Coach Lizzotte is doing a great job with our divers. We have six divers and five have qualified for the state meet. They are improving daily.” Emery said. “The lane 6 swimmers (first-year racers) are making great strides under coach Barnett.”

Masters meet at Husson
Husson University will host the Husson Eagles Masters Meet Sunday beginning at noon. Seventeen events comprise the program, including a medley relay. Interested participants are to contact Thomas Branch at meetdirector@hurricaneswimclub.com. Entries will accepted on the deck.

Cheverus High of Portland, last year’s Class A State Meet runnerup to Bangor High School, races Coach Phil Emery’ Rams at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Husson University pool in Bangor.
In his analysis of the Stags, Emery notes their front line quality and ability to cover all events with multiple quality swimmers.
Leading Cheverus is senior Trebor Lawton, state champion a year ago in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. Lawton’s abilities extend to other distances and events. This dual-meet season he has hit 22.2 seconds in the 50 free and 53.4 in the 100 butterfly.
In addition to quality swimmers, the Stags will challenge the Rams in diving as well with Michael Gordon among the leaders this season in 1-meter diving.
Like Cheverus, Emery’s Rams offer experienced and talented swimmers in their front-line led by junior David Smallwood and Liam Reading.
According to Emery, however, the Rams’ depth is young and developing.
“Every meet is exciting because swimmers are making breakthroughs,” he said.
Saturday’s racing can be expected to produce another wave of improved times.
Cpacj Cindi Howard’s Bangor female swimmers also will race Cheverus Saturday.
Tessa Lindsley leads Cheverus, having displayed the ability to compete successfully at various freestyle distances including the 50 free (25.0), the 100 free (55.8) and the 500 free.
A matchup between Lindsley and Bangor’s talented Emma Waddell could develop in in one of the freestyle events.
Waddell also has the talent to race at an equally high level in other stroke events including the butterfly, individual medley, and the back.
Actually, Bangor’s Julianna McDonald has recorded the fastest 100 free this season in the interscholastic league, fractions ahead of Waddell and Lindsley. And, in the backstroke, Sarah Nappo of Cheverus earlier this month was the state leader in the 100.
Bangor diver Liz Huber is among the state leaders as is Cheverus diver Courtney Kane .

Bangor’s Hamilton honored
Southern Connecticut University recognized former Bangor High diver and current Dartmouth diving coach Christopher Hamilton with the Dr. Bruce Hutchinson Award at the start of the season. The award is given in honor of the late Bruce Hutchinson, SCU’s highly respected swimming coach of 37 years.
The award recognizes a former SCU alum who has made outstanding contributions to diving or swimming. Hamilton, who is in his 14th season as Dartmouth diving coach, has coached 21 Big Green divers to NCAA Zone competition. Hamilton’s Dartmouth divers hold 33 records in the all- time top 10 best performances at Dartmouth
While competing at Southern Connecticut, Hamilton was named the National NCAA Division II Diver of the Year in 1993.
Hamilton becomes the second Bangor High graduate and SCU alum to receive the award as Emery received the recognition several years ago.

Several of coach Susan Lizzotte’s swimmers are ranked among the leaders in the speedy America East Conference as the University of Maine Black Bear swimmers and divers enter the long-course (50-meter) training period of their season during the semester break.
Sophomore Naja Harvey holds the third fastest time in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1 minute, 6.3 seconds while teammate Erica Smrcina’s 57.8 in the 100 butterfly is the third fastest time this season.
Smrcina, a sophomore, also recorded a 2:08.7 in the 200 butterfly for the ninth fastest swim of an America East flyer.
Junior diver Kara Capossella, who has received multiple recognitions as the AE Diver of the Week during her tenure at Maine, totaled the second highest point total for six dives (252) during first-semester competition. Her 1-meter total of 248 points ranks fourth.
Oakland’s Sergey Terrio, a sophomore racer for UMaine, is ranked among the top 10 in the men’s AE with the eighth fastest 200 butterfly at 1:59.3.

Top times for Bangor swimmers

Meanwhile, in Maine interscholastic swimming, Bangor’s Emma Waddell has opened her junior year of racing with impressive performances. Waddell leads Maine high school swimmers in early season racing in the 200 individual medley at 2:14.3, the 50 free (24.6) and the 100 butterfly (58.8). In the 100 freestyle, Waddell’s 55.4 is second to a 55.0 recorded by Julianna McDonald,
a teammate of Waddell.
Liam Reading, a breaststroker for coach Phil Emery’s Rams, holds the fastest male breaststroke time of the young season (1:05.1).
Two Messalonskee seniors, Arthur Conover and Kristen Prelgovisk, have distinguished themselves with outstanding races. Conover is the fastest in the state in the 500 free (4:45) and the 200 free (1:46) while Prelgovisk heads the state in the female breaststroke at 1:08.5.

Swim notes

– Husson University will host the Eagles Masters Meet at noon on Jan. 20. The meet registered with Maine Master’s allows for pre-meet registration as well as on-deck entries. Inquiries regarding the competition should be directed to meet director Thomas Branch at the Bangor-based campus.
– Florida State appears to be preparing for a very fast 200 free relay in NCAA Division I. FSU has the fastest 50 swimmer, Paul Murray, thus far this season at 19.3 as well as the third fastest swimmer, Mark Weber at 19.5.

As the high school swim season enters dual-meet competition, several new rules will govern the 2012-13 action. The rules were approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations Swimming and Diving Rules Committee.

Among the rules changes enacted is Rule 3-3-2 regarding illegal attire worn by an interscholastic competitor. A racing cap marked or labeled illegally under the rule change now has a consequence to the racer.

The previous rule did not specify a consequence.

In 2012-13, if the official identifies the violation prior to the start of the race, the racer will be notified and offered an opportunity to comply with the rule. If compliance delays the start of the race, then the racer is disqualified from the event and remains disqualified from all events until attired legally.

If the illegal attire becomes apparent after the official start of the race, the racer is disqualified at the completion of the race and the performance is nullified. The racer remains ineligible until attire complies with the rule.

In a change expected to eliminate unnecessary disqualifications in backstroke, Rule 8-2-11 allows a swimmer to lift the head to begin the rotation required when initiating the flip turn.

And, according to a change in breaststroke, the initiation of the arm stroke will be determined by officials when there is a “discernible separation of the hands by the breaststroker.”

Bangor boys have good start

Bangor High’s Phil Emery, who coached his first Ram squad during 1969-70, has this year’s Ram squad racing well in the early season. In the Rams’ recent win over Foxcroft Academy, all team members competed producing 45 best times.

Black Bears earn honors

Coach Susan Lizzotte’s University of Maine swimmers and divers earned America East honors for their performances in the Black Bears’ wins over Bates College of Lewiston.

Old Town’s Robbie Bickford was named AE Male Swimmer of the Week. Bickford won the 500 (4 minutes, 57 seconds) and the 1,000 (10:18).

Junior Erica Smrcina from Massachusetts earned the AE Female Swimmer of the Week with her wins in the 200 butterfly (2:12.5) and the 200 breaststroke (2:33).

Maine divers Travis Wibby and Kara Capossela received AE Diver of the Week honors. For Capossela it was her third honor of the season. For South Portland’s Wibby, the award was his second.
