PVCs and Maine meet start off championship season

The boy’s and girl’s PVC meets along with Class A and B KVAC’s, and Southwesterns North took place over the weekend. The meets mark the beginning of the championship season for high school, college, and club swimming. Friday night, the Bangor boys took home the PVC championship title with 375 points to second place MDI’s 189. Bangor started the meet with a win and new pool record in the 200 medley relay (1:40.47). Reading split a very fast 27.85 in the breaststroke and Smallwood cruised with a 22.88 in the butterfly. Ellsworth finished second at 1:47.60 and had the fastest backstroke split with Talor Hamilton splitting 25.45. The 200 freestyle included an electrifying performance from Smallwood. He set the PVC meet record with a 1:43.71, almost ten seconds ahead of Old Town freshman Nick Gould (1:53.47).  Bangor’s Liam Reading finished first in the 200 IM by a strong margin at 2:03.39. In second was MDI’s Tom Gallup at 2:08.70. Ellsworth Sophomore Talor Hamilton won the 50 freestyle with a 22.52. Diving saw a spectacular performance from Bangor’s Grant Lufkin who scored 408.60 over MDI’s Will Greene (392.30). Lufkin’s score meets the requirement for All-American consideration. Smallwood continued his domination with a new team record and PVC meet record in the 100 butterfly (51.70). Old Town earned gold in the 200 freestyle relay beating Bangor’s relay by half a second. In the final individual event MDI’s Tom Gallup (1:01.34) out-touched Liam Reading (1:01.66) in the 100 breaststroke.

At the girl’s meet saturday Bangor Senior Emma Waddell continued to perform with a win in the 200 freestyle, (1:54.43) which broke her own meet record, and the 100 butterfly (56.18). In second in the butterfly was Leila Johnston (57.48), a junior at MDI. Johnston also won the 100 backstroke at 1:00.40 and swam a very fast 24.16 on the front of the winning 200 freestyle relay. Freshman Hannah Wood, from Bangor, won the 200 IM (2:15.55) and the 500 freestyle (5:25.01). The 1 meter diving was won by Bangor Senior Emily Daub with a 317.50. MDI freshman Lydia DaCorte won the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.90. From Foxcroft, Junior Julia Annis captured gold in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:09.68. The Trojans won the meet 328 to Bangor’s 216.

At the KVAC championship saturday Junior Kristy Prelgovisk split a 29.43 50 breaststroke in Messalonskee’s winning 200 medley relay. On the boy’s side Jacob Cost’s backstroke (25.13) and Nate Samson’s breaststroke (28.28) earned Brunswick a victory in the 200 medley relay. Samson went on to win the 200 IM at 1:59.66 and the 100 breaststroke (1:00.99). The girls 200 IM saw Prelgovisk (2:10.01) touch out Brunswick freshman Caitlin Tycz (2:10.94) for first place. Tycz had a spectacular showing in the 100 butterfly posting the top time in the state with a 55.74 which is only .02 seconds off the state record held by Colby Harvey. Tycz also split a very fast 23.55 in the 200 freestyle relay. In the girls 500 Brunswick sophomore Lynsie Russell won with a time of 5:19.77. In the boy’s 100 backstroke Jacob Cost of Brunswick went the fastest time in the state with a 54.00. In the final individual event of the night, the 100 breaststroke, Kristy Prelgovisk broke her own KVAC record with a time of 1:05.36. Nate Samson also won in a time of 1:00.99. Brunswick won both the girls and boys meets.

The Southwesterns North meet was marked by fast times from Deering senior Eric Delmonte. Delmonte split a 27.89 in the 50 breaststroke on the 200 medley relay. He won the 200 IM with the state’s fastest time at 1:58.13. He later set the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke with a 59.67. Greely senior Johnathan Dunnett sped to a victory in the 100 butterfly at 53.50. One of the closest races of the meet also came during the longest race. Sophomore Michael O’Donovan of Cheverus, who also won the 200 freestyle, (1:46.87) out-touched Falmouth junior Jake Perron with a 4:45.23 to Perron’s 4:45.64. Cheverus beat Greely 372.5 to 234.5

At Southwesterns South, Colby Harvey of Waynflete led the girls team to capture the title. Harvey won the 200 IM with the fastest time in the state at 2:09.64. She also won the 100 backstroke with the fastest time in the state at 58.43. Harvey also split a 52.37 on the 400 freestyle relay to help earn them second place. Also from Waynflete Ellen Silk won the 100 butterfly at 57.97 and the 500 freestyle (5:33.08).

 

Maine Meet

The University of Maine men’s team competed at the 1st annual Maine Meet hosted by Bates college saturday. The meet was a championship meet for those who had yet to qualify for the ECAC championship at the Naval Academy. Sophomore Shane Kinnon qualified in the 100 breaststroke. Senior Caleb Hoffman qualified in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and set a pool record in the 200. Senior Captain Brent Williams qualified in the 400 IM while teammate Ryan Fahey set a pool record in the sam event. Fahey and Williams teamed up with Cody Lachance and David Vittori to set a new 800 freestyle relay pool record.
