Bangor boys swimmers post state’s fastest relay times

The defending Class A state champion Bangor High boys lead all Class A teams in each of the three relays, 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 free, according to the recently compiled fastest relay performances of the 2011-12 season.

In the 200 medley relay, coach Phil Emery’s relay team of Matt England, Liam Reading, David Smallwood and Gordon Carroll are nearly two seconds ahead of Brunswick: 1 minute, 44.7 seconds to 1:46.3.

Cheverus of Portland trails Bangor in the 200 free relay 1:37 to 1:37.8 and in the 400 free relay the Rams are four seconds ahead of the Stags, 3:29.4 to 3:33.5.

Carroll, Smallwood, Jeff Rogers and Colin Makovich comprise the 200 free relay while Makovich, Smallwood, England and Matt Fuller swim the 400 free relay.

The Bangor High boys’ 2011-12 season is the 51st season of swimming and diving at the school. Emery was a sophomore on the first team at Bangor in 1961-62.

Cape Elizabeth’s 200 free relay (1:44.6) and 200 medley relay (1:52.9) lead the Class A girls’ relays with Bangor’s 400 free relay of Emma Waddell, Mariah Reading, Meri Wicks and Jamie Humsaker having recorded the league’s fastest time at 3:46.9.

In Bar Harbor, the Mount Desert Island High relays, 200 free relay at 1:49.6 and 200 medley relay at 1:57.5, are the speediest in Class B girls. Greely High of Cumberland Center tops the field in the Class B boys’ relays, although Belfast’s 200 free (1:37.2) and 400 free (3:36.6) are the league’s second fastest. MDI is second fastest in the 200 medley (1:46.6).
